Toll Rates Announced for Gordie Howe International Bridge Ahead of Spring Opening

Detroit, MI — Officials overseeing the new Gordie Howe International Bridge have announced the toll rates drivers will pay when the long-awaited Detroit-to-Windsor crossing opens later this spring.

Passenger vehicles will pay $5.75 USD per crossing, according to the Windsor‑Detroit Bridge Authority, which is responsible for the project. Drivers who enroll in the bridge’s new toll program, called “Breakaway,” will receive a 25% discount, lowering the cost to $4.35 USD per crossing.

Commercial vehicles will be charged $8.75 USD per axle, with Breakaway members paying $6.90 USD per axle.

Officials say the Breakaway system is designed to streamline traffic through automated tolling. Vehicles equipped with a toll tag can use any open lane, where the system will scan the tag and process payment in less than five seconds before lifting the gate.

For now, registration for the Breakaway program is being rolled out to business accounts first, allowing companies to prepare fleets ahead of the bridge opening. Personal accounts for individual drivers are expected to launch in the coming weeks.

Once operational, the Gordie Howe International Bridge will provide a direct highway-to-highway connection between Interstate 75 in Michigan and Ontario Highway 401, one of Canada’s busiest freight corridors. The new span includes six traffic lanes, 16 toll lanes, and 60 customs inspection lanes across both countries.

Officials say the project is designed to improve the movement of people and goods between the United States and Canada, easing congestion at existing Detroit-Windsor crossings while creating a modern border gateway for commercial traffic.

Chuck Andary, interim CEO of the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority, said announcing toll rates and launching the Breakaway program marks a key milestone as crews complete final testing ahead of the spring opening.
