Prosecutor: Detroit Man Stabbed Multiple Times in Neck with Broken Bottle Outside Liquor Store

Detroit, MI – Two Detroit residents have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with a fatal stabbing outside a Detroit liquor store late Tuesday night, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy announced charges against Steven Lewis Hooks, 54, and Bernice Shaneka Chenevert, 31, both of Detroit, in the death of 40-year-old Cordell Harris, also of Detroit.

Authorities allege the stabbing happened at about 11:54 p.m. on March 10, 2026, at a liquor store in the 14800 block of Livernois Avenue. According to prosecutors, Harris spoke with Chenevert before a brief exchange escalated into a verbal altercation. Prosecutors allege Chenevert then made contact with Hooks and handed him a broken glass bottle.

Hooks is accused of stabbing Harris multiple times in the neck with the broken bottle. Harris was privately transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Hooks and Chenevert have each been charged with premeditated first-degree murder.

Both defendants were arraigned March 13, 2026, in 36th District Court and were remanded to jail. A probable cause conference is scheduled for March 23, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. A preliminary examination is scheduled for March 30, 2026, at 8:45 a.m. before Judge Shawn Jacque.
