Baby, Woman Injured After Gunfire Rips Through East Side Detroit Home

DETROIT – A 1-year-old child and a woman were injured after gunfire erupted outside a home on Detroit’s east side early Christmas Eve.

The shooting occurred around 3:30 a.m. on Dec. 24 in the 19000 block of Binder Street, near Outer Drive and Seven Mile. Police were alerted by a ShotSpotter activation and arrived to find multiple bullet holes in the residence, though no one was inside at the time.

Investigators later learned that a 1-year-old baby and a 24-year-old woman had been struck by gunfire and fled the scene to a nearby family member’s home on Concord Street, where police were subsequently called.

According to Arnold Williams of the Detroit Police Department, the child was shot in the leg and the woman sustained a gunshot wound to the hand. Both victims were transported to a local hospital and are expected to survive.

Police believe a suspect may have exited a vehicle and fired multiple rounds at the home. No arrests have been made, and authorities say the shooting may be connected to an earlier incident, though the investigation remains ongoing.

“This is a very sad thing to happen,” Williams said. “The last thing we want on Christmas Eve is a 1-year-old shot.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact Detroit Police or Crime Stoppers.
