Berkley, MI – Police are investigating what they describe as a targeted shooting after a 17-year-old’s vehicle was struck by gunfire near 12 Mile and Buckingham late Saturday night.
According to the Berkley Department of Public Safety, officers were dispatched at 10:47 PM on February 21, 2026, on reports of shots fired and a vehicle fleeing the area. When officers arrived, they did not locate any active disturbance or witnesses.
Roughly an hour later, around 11:45 PM, a family contacted police to report that their vehicle had been shot while parked at 3490 W. 12 Mile. The family completed a formal report, and investigators now believe the shooting was not random. Police say the incident appears to have been a directed attack toward the teen victim or someone associated with him.
Preliminary findings indicate several masked suspects approached a group gathered in a parking lot. As people began to leave, the 17-year-old victim ran to his vehicle to drive away. Investigators say a single shot was fired, striking the rear driver’s side door of the vehicle.
Despite the gunfire, neither the teen driver nor his passenger was injured. All parties left the parking lot immediately after the shot was fired.
Police believe the suspects fled southbound on Royal from 12 Mile in multiple vehicles, including a white or gray mid-size Chevrolet sedan similar to a Malibu and a dark-colored Jeep, possibly maroon or red.
Investigators are now asking residents and businesses in the area to check surveillance cameras from around 11:45 PM that night, particularly for footage showing multiple vehicles traveling together.
