A traffic stop near the U.S.–Canada border led to the recovery of a stolen commercial vehicle and the arrest of a Canadian driver now facing multiple felony charges in Chippewa County.
Michigan State Police say the incident happened on December 12, 2025, around 7:35 p.m., when a Motor Carrier Officer from the MSP Sault Ste. Marie Post was patrolling near the Sault Ste. Marie International Bridge. The officer observed a semi-truck hauling a trailer with multiple commercial vehicle violations and initiated a traffic stop.
During the stop, investigators discovered the semi-truck had been previously reported stolen out of Ontario, Canada. Further inspection revealed the vehicle’s VIN had been altered in what police describe as an apparent attempt to conceal the truck’s true identity. Both the semi-truck and trailer were seized and towed from the scene.
The driver, identified as 24-year-old Yuvraj Singh of Brampton, Ontario, was taken into custody and lodged at the Chippewa County Jail. On December 15, Singh was arraigned in 91st District Court on charges of receiving and concealing a stolen motor vehicle, motor vehicle fraud involving the concealment or misrepresentation of a vehicle’s identity with intent, and operating with an invalid license plate under the International Registration Plan.
Singh was released on a personal recognizance bond with strict conditions, including surrendering his passport, remaining within the county and state, and being monitored by a GPS tether, along with standard bond requirements. As with all criminal cases, the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
Michigan State Police say the investigation was conducted with assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Border Patrol, and Southwest Commercial Auto Recovery.
