Court Records Identify 18-Year-Old Charged In Oakland University Stabbing Days Before 19th Birthday

Rochester Hills, MI → Newly filed court records have identified the suspect charged in connection with the stabbing at Oakland University as 18-year-old Joshua Damon Edwards.

Joshua Damon Edwards

According to court documents, Edwards was booked into the Oakland County Jail on Feb. 10 and is charged with assault with intent to murder, a felony tied to the Feb. 5 stabbing on campus. Records show he is currently 18 years old and set to turn 19 on Feb. 16, meaning he will likely spend his birthday behind bars..

The charge stems from a violent incident reported around 8:15p.m. near Van Wagoner Hall at Oakland University. Police responding to the scene found an 18-year-old Rochester man suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is continuing to recover. Authorities previously stated the victim is not a student.

Investigators say two suspects fled the campus in a dark SUV immediately after the attack.

Police announced during a Feb. 12 press conference that the primary suspect was taken into custody during a traffic stop days after the incident. The Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office authorized a felony warrant for assault with intent to murder, and the case has since been filed in the 52nd District Court in Rochester Hills. He will be formally arraigned on Feb 13.

A second suspect remains at large. Authorities have said they do not believe that individual carried out the stabbing but was present during the incident. That person is described as a man in his early 20s, about 5′8″ to 5′10″ tall, with chin-length dreadlocks. At the time, he was reportedly wearing a black North Face jacket, black pants and white shoes with blue on the back.

Police previously indicated the suspects were on campus visiting friends in residence halls and believe the stabbing was a targeted incident, not a random attack. Officials have said there is no ongoing threat to the campus community, though additional security presence has been increased in residence buildings during evening hours as a precaution.

Anyone with information about the second suspect is asked to contact Oakland University Police at 248-370-3331 as the investigation continues.
