Cows in Roadway Trigger Rollover Crash in Ingham County, Send Elderly Driver to Hospital

A collision involving loose cattle shut down a stretch of roadway in Ingham County early Monday morning and led to a rollover crash that sent one woman to the hospital, authorities said.

Deputies were dispatched around 6:45 a.m. Monday, January 12, 2026, to Okemos Road at Harper Road in Alaiedon Township after receiving reports that vehicles had struck cows in the roadway.

Investigators said a northbound vehicle driven by a 66-year-old woman from Mason first struck a cow and a calf that were in the road. She was not injured in the crash.

Moments later, a southbound vehicle driven by an 81-year-old woman from Holt struck the deceased cow that remained in the roadway. Her vehicle overturned and came to rest on its roof in a roadside ditch.

The Mason Fire Department responded to the scene to stabilize the vehicle and extricate the driver. She was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Okemos Road was closed for approximately one hour Monday morning while emergency crews worked the scene and cleared the roadway. The road has since reopened.

The City of Mason Police Department and Ingham County Animal Control and Shelter assisted at the scene. The incident remains under investigation.
