At approximately 10:12 a.m., Saturday, January 3rd, the Highland Township Fire Department responded to reports of deer on the ice near Dunham and Addaleen on Dunham Lake. Crews arrived to find one deer standing on the ice before a second deer ventured out and fell through. Moments later, the first deer also broke through the ice. One deer was able to regain footing, climb back onto the ice, and safely reach land, while the other remained in the water.
Due to the danger, the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team was activated and responded with a hovercraft. While crews were on scene, a third deer also fell through the ice but managed to self-rescue and reach land. The search and rescue team successfully recovered the remaining deer from the water, wrapping up a coordinated and effective rescue effort by all involved.
