Detroit Man Charged After Dog Found Starving and Near Death in Freezing Conditions

Detroit, MI — A 54-year-old Detroit man is facing felony animal abuse charges after police found his severely emaciated dog abandoned inside a home during freezing winter conditions, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

Kym Worthy announced that Darnell Lamar Robinson has been charged in connection with the neglect and abandonment of his dog, which was initially believed to be deceased when officers responded to a residence in the 19000 block of Eureka Street on January 30.

Detroit police officers arriving at the scene discovered the dog was still alive but suffering from severe emaciation and in urgent need of medical attention. Detroit Animal Care and Control was called, and the animal was transported to APAWS Emergency Veterinary Hospital, where it was treated for hypothermia, dehydration, and extreme malnutrition.

Following an investigation by the Detroit Police Department, Robinson was arrested on February 2. He is charged with Animals – Killing/Torturing, Second Degree, a felony carrying a potential sentence of up to seven years in prison, as well as Animals – Abandoning/Cruelty to One Animal, a misdemeanor punishable by up to 93 days in jail.

“The alleged behavior in this case is deplorable,” Worthy said in a statement. “Leaving a dog to starve and freeze in the cold is not only incredibly cruel, it is also a serious crime.”

Robinson was arraigned in 36th District Court and released on a $20,000 personal bond. A probable cause conference is scheduled for February 13 at 8:30 a.m., followed by a preliminary examination on February 20 at 8:45 a.m. before Judge Ronald Giles.

As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
