Detroit Man Charged In Fatal Clinton Township Accident

MT. CLEMENS, MI — A Detroit man has been formally charged in connection with a deadly multi-vehicle crash in Clinton Township that claimed the life of a 27-year-old Ann Arbor man.

Peter J. Lucido announced that 26-year-old Torrance Irby was arraigned on Friday, January 2, 2026, on felony charges stemming from the December 29, 2025 collision on Metropolitan Parkway.

According to prosecutors, Irby was driving a Ram ProMaster westbound on Metropolitan Parkway, just east of Groesbeck Highway, when he struck a Ford Mustang. The impact pushed the Mustang into the rear of a Ford Transit Connect van. Authorities allege Irby fled the scene on foot but was apprehended shortly afterward.

The driver of the Mustang, 27-year-old El Verson Mitchell of Ann Arbor, was transported to McLaren Macomb Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.

Irby was arraigned before Magistrate Ryan Zemke at the 41B District Court and charged with:

  • Operating While Intoxicated Causing Death, a 15-year felony
  • Failure to Stop at the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Serious Impairment or Death, a 5-year felony

Prosecutors stated these are the maximum charges available under Michigan law based on the evidence currently presented.

Magistrate Zemke set Irby’s bond at $250,000 cash or surety. He is scheduled to appear for a probable cause conference on Monday, January 12, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. before Judge Sebastian Lucido at the 41B District Court.

“Driving while impaired is an entirely preventable act that endangers everyone on the road. In this case, it is alleged that the defendant chose to operate a vehicle while intoxicated and caused a collision that took the life of a young man.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
