Detroit Man Sentenced To Nearly 10 Years After Firing 24 Rounds Into Home Where His Own Daughter Slept

Detroit → A Detroit man who fired more than two dozen rounds into a home where his own six-year-old daughter was sleeping is now headed to federal prison, and court records paint an even deeper picture of the weapons tied to the case.

Jevonte Cassidy Doakes, 33, was sentenced to 110 months (over 9 years) in federal prison on Thursday, February 5, 2026 after being convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Prosecutors say the May 2024 shooting targeted his ex-girlfriend’s home while multiple people, including children, were inside.

One bullet struck a closet door inside the bedroom where his daughter slept, and another round tore through a couch near where other children were resting. Investigators said Doakes called his ex-girlfriend, saying, “Bitch, you still alive?” before hanging up.

Beyond the shooting itself, federal agents uncovered a significant cache of firearms during the investigation that followed.

According to the federal criminal complaint, ATF agents conducted surveillance on two neighboring homes on Joann Street in Detroit before executing search warrants on July 10, 2024. Investigators determined Doakes appeared to be living at what they identified as “Residence 1,” and both Doakes and another man, Joshua Griggs, were seen frequenting the location.

When agents moved in, they recovered multiple weapons and ammunition from inside Residence 1. Among the evidence seized was a Delton Inc. DTI-15 5.56 caliber pistol found under a bed in one of the bedrooms. That same firearm is pictured in the federal complaint and documented as being taken from Residence 1 during the search.

Investigators noted that the weapon matched the same model and style of gun agents had previously observed Griggs carrying during surveillance at the property. Authorities also recovered additional firearms from the homes, including weapons equipped with machinegun conversion devices.

Doakes was taken into custody at the residence during the search. Griggs was located nearby at the time agents executed the warrants. Federal officials later linked one of the seized weapons to multiple shootings in Wayne County, including the incident where Doakes fired into the home where his daughter was sleeping.

Griggs was previously sentenced to 24 months in prison in August 2025 for receiving a firearm while under indictment.

“Javonte DOAKES is the one of the most deserving candidates for federal prison. Using an illegal machine, he recklessly fired 24 rounds into a home full of sleeping children, one of whom was his daughter. These types of acts of gun violence have consequences,” said James Deir, Special Agent in Charge of the ATF Detroit Field Division. “Calling the mother of his child afterward asking if she survived only highlights DOAKES’ complete and utter disregard for human life. ATF will continue working with our partners to identify prolific shooters in the community and hold them accountable for their acts by helping them pack their bags for an extended stay in federal prison.”
