Detroit, MI — A Detroit mother charged after her 6-year-old daughter was fatally shot inside a vehicle on the city’s east side has been granted a personal bond with electronic tether, allowing for her release under court supervision.

According to Wayne County court records, Tonya Charrisse-Annice Johnson, 41, originally received a $30,000 cash or surety bond during her March 5 arraignment in the case. During a bond re-determination hearing Monday, the court modified the bond to a $30,000 personal bond, removing the requirement that she post cash to remain out of custody.
As part of the pretrial release conditions, the court ordered that Johnson be placed on electronic tether monitoring and not possess a firearm or other dangerous weapon. Earlier court records also indicated a no-contact condition tied to the case.
The charges stem from a fatal shooting that happened around 12:06 p.m. Monday in the 9700 block of Harper Avenue near Gratiot on Detroit’s east side, prosecutors said.
Authorities allege Johnson left five children, ages 2 to 11, inside a vehicle while she went into a restaurant at a nearby shopping plaza. Investigators say an 11-year-old boy located an unsecured handgun inside the vehicle and fired it, striking his 6-year-old sister in the head.
The child was rushed to a local hospital but later died from her injuries.
Johnson is charged with:
- Safe storage violation – premises under individual’s control (minor present, death resulting)
- Three counts of second-degree child abuse
- Four counts of felony firearm
When announcing the charges, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy described the case as one of the most troubling examples of unsafe firearm storage her office has encountered.
“The alleged facts of this case are among the worst child safe storage cases that we have seen,” Worthy said.
Johnson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
