Detroit Teen Bound Over To Circuit Court In Deadly Fleeing Case That Killed Married Father Of Two

A 16-year-old Detroit teen has been ordered to stand trial as an adult on multiple felony charges including Second-Degree Murder after a police chase ended in a deadly crash this past summer.

Daniel Shane Canales, 16, was bound over to circuit court following a two-part preliminary exam that concluded this week before 41B District Court Judge Jacob Femminineo Jr.

Prosecutors allege that in the early morning hours of July 12, 2025, Canales was behind the wheel of a stolen vehicle when officers attempted a traffic stop. Instead of stopping, he allegedly fled at a high rate of speed before crashing into another car.

The driver of that vehicle was married father, 28-year-old Alex Habib of Madison Heights who later died from his injuries.

Canales faces the following charges:

⌁ Count 1: Second Degree Murder (any term up to life)

⌁ Count 2: Fleeing Police – First Degree (15-year felony)

⌁ Count 3: Operating on Suspended/Revoked License – Causing Death (15-year felony)

⌁ Count 4: Fleeing Police – Third Degree (5-year felony)

⌁ Count 5: Unlawful Driving Away of a Motor Vehicle (5-year felony)

He remains held without bond at the Juvenile Justice Center in Mt. Clemens and is set for arraignment on November 17, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. before Judge James M. Maceroni in Macomb County Circuit Court.

Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido praised investigators and emphasized accountability regardless of age:

“Accountability matters, regardless of age. Our duty is to pursue justice, and that means proceeding with the full weight of the law.”

Lucido also urged lawmakers to continue working on tougher penalties for drivers who flee police, saying,

“Every time someone runs, they roll the dice with innocent lives. I want to end that gamble.”

All defendants accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
