Detroit Zoo Announces Death of Giraffe Calf Okidi After Habitat Injury

Royal Oak, MI – The Detroit Zoo announced it is mourning the loss of Okidi, a giraffe calf born on Nov. 23, 2025, after the young animal suffered a severe injury inside her habitat earlier this week.

According to zoo officials, Okidi sustained significant injuries before opening hours after running into a habitat viewing panel in her indoor enclosure. Animal care and veterinary teams responded immediately and monitored the calf around the clock.

Diagnostic testing later revealed a serious vertebral injury. Given the severity of the damage and what officials described as a poor prognosis, the zoo’s animal care and veterinary team made the decision to humanely euthanize Okidi.

Zoo officials said the herd, including Okidi’s mother, Zara, was given the opportunity to observe the calf following the procedure. The step is considered important in maintaining healthy herd dynamics. Staff continue to closely monitor and support Zara, along with other members of the herd — Jabari, Mpenzi and Kivuli.

In a statement, the zoo said Okidi “brought joy to so many” and was deeply loved by the staff who cared for her daily. Officials also thanked the community for its support as they grieve the loss.

The zoo did not indicate whether any changes will be made to the indoor habitat following the incident.
