According to police, the trooper was traveling northbound on Washington Boulevard and was stopped at a red light. When the traffic signal turned green, the trooper proceeded into the intersection and was struck by a passenger vehicle traveling westbound on W. Congress Street.

Investigators determined the driver of the passenger vehicle, a 63-year-old woman from Livonia, was distracted at the time of the crash and was texting while driving, causing her to miss the red traffic signal.

“Fortunately no one was hurt in this preventable crash,” said Mike Shaw. “We want to remind drivers to keep your eyes on the road and not on your phone.”

No injuries were reported. The incident remains under investigation.
