Fatal I-96 Crash: Driver Hits Snowplow, Disabled Car Struck Moments Later

Detroit, MI – A late-night chain-reaction crash on Detroit’s west side left one man dead after his vehicle collided with a Wayne County snowplow and was then struck by another SUV, according to Michigan State Police.

The incident happened around 11:50 p.m. Monday on eastbound I-96 Express near Southfield.

Investigators say a Wayne County plow truck was actively salting in the left lane when a 2004 Toyota passenger vehicle sideswiped the truck. After the initial impact, the Toyota ricocheted off the plow and came to a stop in the center lane of the freeway reportedly without lights.

As troopers were en route to the scene, a second crash occurred. A 2006 Jeep Commander traveling eastbound struck the disabled Toyota in the roadway.

The driver of the Toyota, a 32-year-old man from Farmington, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities say the drivers of both the plow truck and the Jeep were not injured.

The freeway was shut down as investigators worked the scene. Michigan State Police’s Traffic Crash Reconstruction Unit is continuing to investigate.

Officials say the crash serves as a stark reminder of the dangers around active snowplows.

“This is an unfortunate reminder to drive carefully near snow plows,” said First Lieutenant Mike Shaw. “Please make sure to slow down and give plows plenty of room.”
