FBI Launches National Counter-Drone Training Center As Threats From Unmanned Aircraft Grow

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has formally rolled out a new national counter-drone initiative, marking a major expansion of its efforts to combat the growing misuse of unmanned aircraft by criminals, terrorists, and hostile foreign actors. The announcement was made December 27 by Kash Patel, who said the bureau has invested significant time and resources into modernizing its counter-UAS capabilities and strengthening coordination with law enforcement agencies nationwide.

Central to that effort is the newly established National Counter-UAS Training Center, now operating out of Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville. The facility was launched following a June 6 executive order signed by Donald Trump directing federal agencies to develop recommendations for a national counter-drone training hub. According to the FBI, the center was stood up rapidly and has already completed its first training class this year.

The FBI says the training center is designed to prepare state, local, tribal, and territorial law enforcement, along with correctional agencies, to safely detect, identify, track, and when legally authorized, mitigate unlawful drone activity. All instruction is conducted in line with authorities outlined in the 2026 National Defense Authorization Act passed by Congress.

Officials emphasized that the program is not just about technology, but discipline and coordination, particularly ahead of large-scale events that present elevated security risks. The FBI noted that the center will play a key role in national preparedness for events such as the FIFA World Cup 2026 and the 2028 Summer Olympics, both of which will be hosted in the United States.

Federal officials say the counter-UAS initiative reflects a broader shift in how national security agencies are adapting to evolving threats, calling it a long-term investment expected to deliver significant security benefits in the years ahead.
