The FBI is warning Michigan residents of a new scam involving random packages showing up at your door. It’s called “brushing” and it involves a QR code and your curiosity.
The agency says that scammers are sending packages to unsuspecting peoples homes with no shipping information on the box, just your address and inside of the package is a QR code or codes. Often times the code is labeled with a phrase like “claim your prize” or “confirm delivery” by scanning the code.
The FBI’s advice is simple: DON’T SCAN THE QR CODE.
Once you scan the code, your phone can be infected with malware, or your phones web browser may direct you to a web-site to enter personal information.
The FBI says if you’ve scanned the code and are taken to a web-site then do NOT enter personal information into any webpage. The agency also says do NOT download any apps if prompted.
If you’ve been a victim of this scam already the agency says to change your passwords, monitor financial accounts and obtain a free credit report to detect any suspicious activity.
