A Hazel Park man who shot his girlfriend’s adult son in the face during a domestic dispute has been sentenced to prison in Oakland County.

Charles Lamar Thomas was sentenced January 13, 2026, after entering a no contest plea, receiving a prison sentence of 8 to 30 years. Court records show the sentence was imposed under Michigan’s habitual offender, fourth offense statute, meaning the punishment was significantly more severe than what a first-time offender would face. Thomas received 294 days of jail credit toward his sentence and was ordered to have no contact with the victim.
The sentence stemmed from multiple felony firearm offenses, including carrying a concealed weapon, discharging a firearm in or at a building causing injury, and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.
The shooting happened March 24, 2025, inside a home on East Harry Avenue in Hazel Park.
Police said the victim was at his mother’s house retrieving belongings when an argument broke out between his mother and Thomas. During the dispute, the victim told Thomas to stop offending his mother. Investigators said Thomas then pulled out a gun.
As the victim attempted to push the weapon away while his mother tried to intervene, he was shot once in the shoulder and then shot a second time in the face.
The victim was able to retrieve a firearm from another room and return fire, striking Thomas. Both men left the scene and drove themselves to nearby hospitals for treatment.
