A community is reeling after the tragic discovery of a Hazel Park student and his mother, both found dead in their home on Monday afternoon in what investigators are calling a suspected double homicide.
Hazel Park Police say officers were called to the residence around 4:15 p.m. on September 1 after a report of an unresponsive woman. When they arrived, officers located the bodies of a 41 year old woman and her 12 year old son inside the home. Both had injuries consistent with trauma.
Police confirmed the case is being investigated as a double homicide but stressed that there is no indication of an ongoing threat to the community. Authorities said information on possible suspects is still being developed.
Hazel Park Schools Superintendent Amy Wilcox addressed the heartbreaking news in a message to families, writing “We are heartbroken to learn of the passing of one of our students and his mother. This is a devastating loss for our Hazel Park Schools family and our entire community. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this tragedy.”
Wilcox added that mental health professionals would be on site in the schools to help grieving students and staff navigate the difficult days ahead. She urged parents to reach out if their child needs support, saying “Please do not hesitate to contact us if your child needs additional care or someone to talk to. We are here for you.”
The Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to conduct autopsies to determine official causes of death. Police have not released the names of the victims as of Tuesday morning.
