Hazel Park High School classes went on as scheduled Monday morning after police quickly identified and arrested a student accused of making a threat over text messages late Sunday night.
According to Hazel Park Schools, School Resource Officers were alerted to a possible threat and immediately began investigating with local law enforcement. The student behind the threat was quickly located and taken into custody.
District officials said there are no credible threats to students or the community, and that the response from both school staff and police helped bring the situation under control before the start of the school day.
Superintendent Amy Wilcox said the district takes any threat seriously and thanked the Hazel Park Police Department and the district’s two School Resource Officers for their swift action. She added that the student involved will face disciplinary consequences, which could include expulsion.
Hazel Park Schools reminded parents to speak with their children about the seriousness of making threats and encouraged anyone who hears or sees potential danger to report it immediately using the state’s OK2Say program.
