Minnesota Rep. Ilhan Omar has formally endorsed Michigan Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist in his bid for governor, lending national progressive support to the Democratic candidate.
In her endorsement, Omar said, “Garlin Gilchrist understands that high costs are squeezing working families, and that Donald Trump is only out for himself and his billionaire friends.” The quote is now being featured prominently in Gilchrist campaign materials as part of his economic messaging.
The endorsement comes as Omar’s home state of Minnesota remains embroiled in one of the largest public fraud investigations in recent history, involving pandemic-era and welfare programs. Federal and state prosecutors have charged dozens of individuals in schemes that siphoned hundreds of millions, and potentially more than $1 billion in taxpayer funds, primarily tied to child nutrition and housing assistance programs.
While Omar has not been charged or accused of wrongdoing, the scale of the fraud and its connection to agencies and communities within her district has made the scandal a national political flashpoint, particularly in debates over government oversight, accountability, and public trust.
Omar has fought tirelessly for working people, and she understands that Trump’s reckless agenda is destroying the lives of working families, killing jobs, and raising costs. I’m ready to stand tall alongside her and continue the fight for Michiganders.
