Commerce Township, MI → Oakland County Sheriff’s Office detectives are investigating the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old Inkster man whose body was discovered Monday morning near a lake access point in Commerce Township.

Authorities identified the victim as Andre Sontay Avant Jr., 19. His body was found early Feb. 16 near the Proud Lake boat launch on Wixom Road. According to the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office, an autopsy determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound and ruled the manner of death a homicide.
Deputies were called to the area shortly before 9 a.m. after a person visiting the park discovered the body and contacted authorities. Investigators later confirmed the victim was Avant.
Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard described the killing as “brutal and senseless” and said the case has left the victim’s family and community searching for answers.
“We are committed to pursuing justice for this individual and holding every person involved fully accountable,” Bouchard said. “We need the public’s help. If you saw anything suspicious in the area or have any information, no matter how small it may seem, please come forward. There is a reward being offered, and your information could be the key to bringing those responsible to justice.”
Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, including Avant’s movements prior to his death. Authorities are asking anyone who may have seen Avant on Sunday or early Monday, or who noticed suspicious activity in the area near Proud Lake Recreation Area, to contact investigators.
