Detroit, MI – A 40-year-old Virginia man is now facing murder charges after a crash in Detroit left a husband and wife dead.
Following an investigation by the Detroit Police Department, the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has charged Theopris Mays, 40, of Herndon, Virginia, in connection with a fatal crash that killed Andre Boynton, 60, and Carla Boynton, 57, both of Durham, North Carolina. Mays was working as a Lyft driver at the time of the incident.
According to authorities, on February 22, 2026 at approximately 10:15 a.m., officers were dispatched to a warehouse in the 6000 block of Rosa Parks Boulevard for a reported single-vehicle crash. When police arrived, they found the vehicle upright against a loading dock door. Both victims were trapped inside and unresponsive. Medics pronounced them dead at the scene.
Prosecutors allege Mays was driving recklessly at a high rate of speed when he lost control and slammed into the building, fatally injuring the Boyntons. It is further alleged that Mays fled the scene on foot before being arrested a short time later following a DPD investigation.
Mays is charged with:
• Two counts of Second-Degree Murder
• One count of Reckless Driving Causing Death
• One count of Leaving the Scene of an At-Fault Accident – Causing Death
If convicted, the murder charges alone carry a potential sentence of up to life in prison.
Mays is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
