A heavily loaded semi-truck hauling roughly 140,000 pounds of pea gravel and sand overturned late Tuesday morning in the S-curves of US-131, forcing a long-term shutdown of a major Grand Rapids ramp.

Michigan State Police say the southbound semi began to pitch left around 11 a.m. The driver attempted to correct but drifted into the ramp from westbound I-196 to southbound US-131, striking a concrete wall and becoming partially wedged under the structure. No other vehicles were involved. Crews worked for nearly an hour to free the driver, who suffered only minor injuries.
The impact caused enough structural concern that the ramp will remain closed through April 30, 2026, according to MDOT. Bridge repair and inspection work is underway.
Detour: Exit westbound I-196 at Lane Ave, go south on Lane Ave, east on First Street, then merge onto eastbound I-196 to reconnect with southbound US-131.
