A 33-year-old Novi man is accused of stealing a Medstar ambulance with a paramedic and patient inside and later crashing it in Northville Township Friday afternoon.
Police say the driver, identified as Changlin Li, was being treated for injuries from a rollover crash near Novi and 10 Mile when he suddenly took off in the ambulance. Officers chased him as he hit speeds over 70 mph through a construction zone before slamming into another vehicle at Eight Mile and Beck.
A 72-year-old Plymouth man was hospitalized with broken ribs and a dislocated shoulder.
Li allegedly tried to grab an officer’s gun twice, including after being taken to the hospital. Police also recovered a knife.
He’s charged with carjacking, fleeing and eluding, two counts of assaulting/resisting/obstructing police, two counts of attempting to disarm a peace officer, and carrying a concealed weapon.
Bond was set at $5 million.
