Grand Rapids, MI → According to the Grand Rapids Police Department, officers were pursuing a man on a bicycle around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday evening after receiving information that he may have been armed. The chase led officers into an apartment complex parking lot near Eastern Avenue SE and Logan Street.

Police said a K-9 unit engaged the suspect as officers attempted to take him into custody. During the arrest attempt, the man allegedly resisted. An officer then fired his weapon, striking the suspect.

The man was transported to a local hospital, where he died early Thursday morning.

Investigators reported that a handgun was recovered at the scene.

As is standard protocol in officer-involved shootings, the Michigan State Police Sixth District Incident Response Team is leading the investigation. In a statement posted to social media, MSP confirmed the shooting occurred around 9:25 p.m. near MLK Jr. Street and Eastern Avenue SE and advised residents to expect a heavy police presence in the area.

MSP later confirmed the suspect, described only as an adult male, died at the hospital. No additional information about the man’s identity has been released.

The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, which is routine procedure pending the outcome of the investigation.

The shooting remains under investigation.
