YPSILANTI, Mich. — A man is dead following a police pursuit that ended in a crash and officer-involved shooting early Tuesday morning in Ypsilanti.
According to the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, deputies spotted a van traveling without headlights or a license plate near Michigan Avenue and Prospect Road shortly before 2:00 a.m. on Jan. 6. When deputies attempted a traffic stop, the driver fled.
Authorities said the pursuit continued through city streets, with the suspect driving the wrong way on Grove Road and attempting to ram deputy and officer vehicles. Around 2:07 a.m., the van collided with a sheriff’s patrol vehicle near South Prospect Street and Towner Street.
Shortly after the crash, deputies reported shots fired and were advised that the suspect was armed with a shotgun. Deputies returned fire, and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
No deputies, officers, or bystanders were injured during the incident.
The investigation has been turned over to the Michigan State Police in accordance with standard procedure for officer-involved shootings. Upon completion, the findings will be submitted to the prosecutor’s office for review.
“To respect the privacy of the individual involved and their family, information regarding the identity of the person cannot be released,” the sheriff’s office said.
As of Tuesday morning, Prospect Street near Michigan Avenue remained closed while investigators continued to process the scene.
