A 21 year old man is dead after he was shot inside an unauthorized barbershop being run by a contracted janitor in the back of Charles Wright Academy of Arts and Science on Berg Road.
Police say the victim was dropped off at a local hospital around 6:45 p.m. Friday. The driver told officers the shooting happened at the school. When police arrived, they found a scene at the rear of the building and learned the janitor had been running a private haircut operation after hours that was not approved by Detroit Public Schools Community District.
Officers say the victim was in the middle of getting a haircut when another man showed up and opened fire. The janitor witnessed the shooting and was not injured.
The victim later died at the hospital. Police say the suspect and victim likely knew each other. Investigators also stress this was not a school shooting and no students or district employees were present.
DPSCD released a statement confirming the shooting involved people who were not part of the school community and that the district is fully cooperating with police.
Detectives have identified the suspect and are searching for him. The investigation is ongoing.
