Man Out On Bond For State Child Porn Case Now Agrees To Federal Guilty Plea On Child Exploitation Charges

Grand Rapids, MI – A West Michigan orthodontist who was once out on bond for state child pornography charges has now agreed to plead guilty in federal court to multiple counts of sexual exploitation of a minor. Forty-three-year-old Thomas Shannon, former owner of Shannon Orthodontics in Grandville and Plainwell, was originally arrested in 2023 after investigators uncovered evidence of child sexually abusive material. Despite the serious charges, Shannon was granted a $20,000 bond and released while awaiting trial, a decision that, in hindsight, proved disastrous.

While free on bond, Shannon continued to prey on minors online, according to investigators. His state charges included two counts of aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material, two counts of possession, and four counts of using a computer to commit a crime, felonies carrying potential decades in prison. Yet even those didn’t slow him down. Authorities say he used apps like Snapchat, OmeTV, FaceTime, and text messaging to contact underage girls, often asking them to send sexually explicit photos or videos, sometimes in exchange for money. Court records show there are 21 identified victims, ranging in age from 12 to 17.

The digital trail was impossible to ignore. Investigators tied messages, payments through Cash App, and files back to Shannon. In one bizarre twist, Shannon even hired his own private forensic expert to prove his innocence, only for that expert to find child sexual abuse material on his phone and turn it over to police. That misstep, coupled with new evidence, triggered a federal investigation in 2025. Federal agents arrested Shannon again in August 2025, charging him with attempted receipt, receipt, and possession of child pornography, as well as attempted and actual sexual exploitation of a minor.

The federal case absorbed his state charges, which prosecutors dropped to allow the U.S. Attorney’s Office to pursue harsher penalties. Evidence revealed Shannon had engaged in illegal communications with victims not only from his home in Kent County but also while on his boat in Ottawa County, both now seized by authorities. During the investigation, agents recovered numerous files of explicit child pornography on Shannon’s phone, some depicting 10-year-olds engaged in sex acts and even infants being victimized.

As part of his plea agreement, Shannon will forfeit his cell phone and his boat to law enforcement. He faces 15 to 60 years in federal prison and up to $250,000 in fines. Upon release, he will be under supervised release for 5 years to life and will be required to register as a sex offender. His official Change of Plea hearing is scheduled for October 31, 2025, in federal court.

Thomas Shannon’s case serves as yet another example of how some offenders, even after being given a chance at freedom, simply can’t or won’t stop. From orthodontist to predator, Shannon went from treating smiles to destroying lives, and now he’s facing decades behind bars for it.
