Mass Shooting at Detroit Repast Leaves 2 Dead, 2 Injured on East Side

DETROIT — A mass shooting at a funeral repast on Detroit’s east side left two people dead and two others wounded Friday night, turning what should have been a time of remembrance into another scene of violence.

Detroit Police responded just before 8:30 p.m. to the 19000 block of Sherwood Street near American Legion Post 375 and the J5 Legacy Event Center. Initial reports indicated three victims had been shot. A fourth victim later arrived at a Metro Detroit hospital, bringing the total to four.

A woman in her 20s and a man in his 30s were pronounced dead. Two additional victims were hospitalized. Their conditions have not been publicly released.

According to Detroit Police Homicide Captain Marcus Thirkill, approximately 100 people were attending the repast when an altercation escalated in the parking lot. Investigators believe the shooter and victims were known to each other. Authorities have not yet released a suspect description or announced any arrests.

“This was a tragic event for those attending,” Thirkill said, noting investigators are reviewing surveillance footage, cellphone video, and interviewing witnesses.

The case is being led by the Detroit Police Department’s Homicide Division, alongside the Michigan State Police, FBI, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Detroit Police Homicide Unit or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
