Michigan Trio Arrested After Attempted Drug Drop into Prison Yard

Newberry, MI — Two men and a juvenile from lower Michigan have been arrested after authorities say they attempted to smuggle drugs into the Newberry Correctional Facility in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Daquarius Turner

According to Michigan State Police, troopers were alerted on Feb. 28 by prison staff about a possible smuggling attempt involving a suspicious vehicle near the prison grounds. Troopers from the Sault Ste. Marie Post responded and began surveillance in the area.

During the investigation, prison staff discovered a package inside the prison yard that investigators say contained approximately 100 grams of methamphetamine and four ounces of THC wax. Authorities believe the drugs were intended to be delivered to inmates inside the facility.

Police later stopped a vehicle connected to the activity and took three suspects into custody.

Trayvonte Brown

Two adult suspects were identified as Trayvonte Brown, 27, of Kalamazoo, and Daquarius Turner, 32, of Kalamazoo. Both men were arraigned March 3 in Luce County’s 92nd District Court on identical charges.

The charges include:

• Controlled substance delivery or manufacture of methamphetamine, felony
• Controlled substance delivery or manufacture of marijuana, felony
• Bringing contraband into a prison, felony
• Contributing to the delinquency of a minor, misdemeanor

Both Brown and Turner were given $10,000 cash or surety bonds and are scheduled to return to court March 12.

The Goods

Authorities also arrested a 16-year-old male from Battle Creek, who is accused of smuggling contraband into a prison and possessing methamphetamine and THC with intent to deliver. Because he is a juvenile, his identity has not been released.

Michigan State Police say troopers were assisted in the investigation by the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team, the Luce County Sheriff’s Office, and staff at the Newberry Correctional Facility.

The investigation into the attempted drug drop remains ongoing.
