Ypsilanti, MI — A Mt. Clemens native and U.S. Navy veteran who was shot and killed by Washtenaw County Sheriff’s deputies earlier this year has been identified by family as 34-year-old John Andrew Jenuwine.

According to authorities, the incident happened in the early morning hours of January 6, 2026, in the Ypsilanti area after Jenuwine fled from police in a van. Officials say the pursuit ended when the vehicle flipped over. Deputies reported that Jenuwine had a rifle, and approximately 27 shots were fired into the vehicle. It was later determined that he was unarmed at the time of the shooting.

Jenuwine was born May 19, 1991, in Mt. Clemens and grew up in Cottrellville Township. He graduated from Marine City High School in 2009 before proudly serving six years in the United States Navy. Family members described him as an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting, fishing, motorcycles, video games, and electronics. He was also a member of Hell’s Our Home M/C and was known as someone deeply loyal to his family and friends.

The Michigan State Police are conducting an investigation into the shooting. An attorney representing Jenuwine’s family has indicated a wrongful death lawsuit is expected, alleging that proper training protocols and procedures may have been violated. County officials have declined to comment due to the ongoing investigation.
