Nearly 35-Hour Standoff With Man In Ypsilanti Ends Safely

A tense barricaded situation in the City of Ypsilanti involving an armed man ended safely late Monday night after nearly 30 hours of crisis negotiations, concluding a police response that lasted nearly 35 hours in total.

At approximately 10:42 PM, officials announced that the 53-year-old man who had barricaded himself inside the upper levels of a residence was safely taken into custody without injuries. Law enforcement credited extended crisis negotiation efforts and the involvement of Community Mental Health professionals for the peaceful outcome.

“This was a very tense situation over the course of multiple days,” authorities said in a statement. “We are grateful that he was able to be taken into custody safely. Thank you to the dedicated professionals on our Community Mental Health team and all the officers and deputies from neighboring agencies who helped to ensure that no one was injured during this situation.”

The incident began around 12:23 PM on January 4, when officers from the Ypsilanti Police Department responded to reports of a man banging on neighbors’ doors with what initially appeared to be a long stick. Upon arrival, officers determined the object was a sword. The individual reportedly confronted officers before retreating into a residence.

Due to the escalating risk, Washtenaw County Crisis Negotiators, including Community Mental Health workers, and the Metro SWAT Team were called in to assist. The man barricaded himself inside a portion of the home while still armed with the sword, and officials said it was unknown whether additional weapons were present.

Throughout the standoff, law enforcement emphasized patience, noting that rushing the situation would increase the risk of injury to both the individual and responding officers. Portions of the residence were cleared during the incident, and authorities maintained that the situation remained contained with no immediate threat to the broader public.

Residents were repeatedly advised to avoid the 1100 block of West Cross Street between Summit and Westmoreland while the perimeter remained in place. Those needing access to homes, pets, or medication were instructed to coordinate with dispatch.

Authorities say the matter remains an ongoing investigation and that no further details are being released at this time.
