Hollywood just saw one of the biggest shake-ups in its history. Netflix, the streaming giant that changed how the world watches TV, is now set to take control of Warner Bros.’ legendary film studio and HBO’s powerhouse streaming operations in a massive $72 billion deal that could redefine the industry for years to come.
Netflix will gain ownership of Warner Bros.’ iconic film library and prestige programming from HBO and HBO Max, including global franchises such as Harry Potter, Batman, Game of Thrones, and The Sopranos. For Netflix, a company built on disruption and original programming, this marks a transition into becoming one of Hollywood’s most dominant traditional studios as well. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos called it a “rare opportunity” to unite historic storytelling power with the world’s largest streaming audience.
The deal comes after a fast-moving bidding war that included Paramount Skydance and Comcast, both hoping to score Warner Bros.’ entertainment assets. Paramount’s final offer reportedly came in higher per share, but Netflix ultimately won due to cleaner terms and fewer regulatory roadblocks. Warner Bros. Discovery shareholders will receive a mix of cash and Netflix stock once the acquisition closes.
Before the transaction is finalized, Warner Bros. Discovery will spin off cable properties, including CNN, TNT, and TBS, into a separate publicly traded company called Discovery Global. That process is expected to happen in summer 2026, with the full acquisition likely closing 12 to 18 months afterward, pending global regulatory approvals. Both sides have agreed to significant breakup fees if the deal falls apart, a sign of just how determined they are to get it done.
The move signals a dramatic new stage in the streaming wars. Netflix, long known for building its empire from scratch, now owns one of Hollywood’s most valuable content vaults and the HBO brand, a name still synonymous with top-tier television. With competitors like Disney and Amazon still aggressively expanding, Netflix just made a statement: Not only is it the leader in streaming, it intends to dominate the future of entertainment on every front.
