The Oakland County Republican Party is demanding Michigan Senator Elissa Slotkin resign immediately after she appeared in a political video encouraging U.S. service members to ignore orders based on their views of the Commander in Chief.
Chairman Vance Patrick condemned Slotkin’s actions, warning that this goes beyond simple recklessness and enters the territory of seditious conspiracy, a federal crime that involves encouraging others to defy or overthrow lawful authority.
“When you put on the uniform, you swear an oath to the Constitution and the chain of command, not to a political party or a particular President,” said Chairman Patrick. “For Senator Slotkin to even suggest that troops can pick and choose which orders to follow isn’t just dangerous, it could be considered seditious conspiracy. In plain English, that means she is encouraging people to break the law and undermine the government itself. No elected official should ever cross that line.”
Patrick explained that seditious conspiracy, put simply, is when someone tries to get others to work together to undermine the authority of the government, especially the military chain of command.
“Our military is not a pawn in political games. You never, under any circumstances, tell service members that it is acceptable to ignore orders because you disagree with the President,” Patrick continued. “That kind of talk can tear at the very fabric of our armed forces. It sows chaos within the ranks and threatens national security. What Senator Slotkin did is not just a political stunt, it could potentially be a crime.”
Senior Advisor Brian Szmytke added that Slotkin’s conduct is fundamentally incompatible with her oath of office and her responsibility to the people of Michigan.
“Seditious conspiracy is one of the gravest charges in American law because it deals with undermining the system that keeps our country stable and secure,” Szmytke said. “Senator Slotkin’s willingness to toy with the chain of command and the core values of our military is a direct affront to every man and woman who has taken the oath to serve. Our troops deserve leaders who stand up for the rule of law, not ones who encourage them to break it.”
The Oakland County Republican Party is calling not only for Senator Slotkin’s immediate resignation, but also for the United States Department of Justice to launch a full investigation into whether her actions constitute seditious conspiracy.
“If Senator Slotkin believes it is acceptable to encourage service members to disregard lawful orders, she has no place in the United States Senate,” said Chairman Patrick. “At minimum, she owes every service member and veteran a direct apology for undermining the oath that binds us as a nation. The chain of command is not optional. Elected leaders must be held to the highest standard. The Department of Justice should investigate this fully, and if her actions are found to be seditious, the consequences should be swift and severe.”
