Oakland County Sheriff Helps Rescue 71-Year-Old Man Who Fell Through Ice On New Years Eve

A 71-year-old man was rescued New Years Eve after his snowmobile fell through the ice on Pleasant Lake in Waterford Township, triggering a response from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team.

Deputies said the call came in around 5:45 p.m. from the man’s wife, who reported that her husband had gone through the ice while operating a snowmobile on the lake. Two nearby neighbors went onto the ice in an attempt to locate him but were initially unsuccessful. Both neighbors were able to safely return to shore.

Personnel from the Waterford Regional Fire Department later located the man and brought him out of the water. He was transported to St. Joseph Hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries.

Authorities said the incident serves as a serious reminder that ice conditions can change rapidly and may be unsafe even during extended periods of cold weather. The sheriff’s office urged residents to use extreme caution around frozen lakes and waterways and to avoid traveling on ice unless conditions are known to be safe.
