One Suspect In Flint Animal Hoarding Case Arrested – Other May Be In Tennessee

Flint Township, MI — The search for Kim and Brenda Shires took a major turn this week after detectives tracked down Brenda Shires following last month’s disturbing animal cruelty investigation that led to the rescue of more than 60 dogs and the discovery of nearly 30 dead dogs inside a home.

Brenda Shires

According to authorities, Flint Township detectives continued working behind the scenes after the case first came to light. On Thursday, March 12, detectives contacted the Grand Rapids Police Department and asked officers to check an address connected to Brenda Shires. In less than an hour, Brenda was taken into custody.

Arrangements were then made to transfer her to Flint Township detectives, and she was ultimately lodged at the Genesee County Jail. The following day, March 13, Brenda Shires was arraigned on felony charges and given a $150,000 bond.

While Brenda is now in custody, the search is still ongoing for Kim Shires. Detectives believe Kim fled Michigan and may be in Tennessee in an effort to avoid prosecution.

Authorities are asking anyone with information on Kim Shires’ whereabouts to contact Crime Stoppers of Flint & Genesee County or Detective Lopez at 810-600-3250.

The case has drawn strong reaction because of the scale of the alleged abuse. More than 60 dogs were rescued, while nearly 30 others were found dead inside the home. For investigators and animal advocates alike, the arrests and court proceedings are only one part of the fight. The focus now remains on locating Kim Shires and pursuing justice for the animals that were rescued, as well as those that were left behind and died.
