Monroe Township, MI – A 41-year-old woman from Newport was killed Friday evening after being struck by a vehicle along South Telegraph Road in Monroe Township, according to a news release from the Michigan State Police Monroe Post.
Troopers were dispatched to the scene near East Dunbar Road at approximately 6:32 p.m. on February 6, 2026, for a report of a single vehicle versus pedestrian crash. When first responders arrived, the pedestrian was found with fatal injuries.
Investigators say troopers had been called to the same area shortly before the crash for reports of two pedestrians walking in and out of the roadway south of the intersection. Troopers searched the area and spoke with a passerby who reported the activity but were unable to locate the individuals at that time. Authorities later learned the pedestrians had gone into a nearby gas station during that search.
After the crash was reported, a trooper arrived quickly and began medical rescue efforts alongside the Monroe Township Fire Department. Monroe Community Ambulance paramedics continued advanced resuscitation attempts, but the woman ultimately succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Telegraph Road is a heavily traveled main roadway, and conditions at the time were challenging. It was dark with no streetlights in the immediate area. A light dusting of snow covered the roadway, and weather conditions included light snowfall and freezing winds reaching up to 24 mph.
Police said the driver, a 43-year-old woman from Monroe, is not suspected of being intoxicated.
The crash remains under investigation by troopers, the Michigan State Police Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team, and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Medical Examiner Investigator. Authorities were assisted at the scene by the Monroe Township Fire Department and Monroe Community Ambulance.
