AUBURN HILLS, MI — A targeted shooting in Auburn Hills earlier this month has resulted in multiple felony charges against a Pontiac man, according to the Auburn Hills Police Department.
Police say officers were dispatched around 12:40 pm on January 7, 2026, to the area of Barrington Square and Squirrel Road after reports of shots fired. When officers arrived, they confirmed a firearm had been discharged in a parking lot, striking an unoccupied vehicle. Investigators determined the incident was isolated and targeted, with no injuries reported and no ongoing threat to the public.
Following an investigation led by Auburn Hills detectives, with assistance from the FBI Oakland County Gang and Violent Crime Task Force, a suspect was identified and taken into custody on January 12, 2026.
On January 14, 2026, the Oakland County Prosecutor’s Office authorized charges against James Cardell Adams, a 27-year-old Pontiac resident. Adams is charged with Carrying a Concealed Weapon, Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, Felony Firearm, and Malicious Destruction of Property over $1,000, all felony offenses.
Adams was arraigned before Magistrate Marie Soma at the 52-3rd District Court, where bond was set at $10,000. He remains lodged at the Oakland County Jail.
Under Michigan law, Carrying a Concealed Weapon carries a possible penalty of up to 5 years in prison or a $2,500 fine. Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person is punishable by up to 5 years in prison and or a $5,000 fine. Felony Firearm carries a mandatory 2-year prison term, while Malicious Destruction of Property over $1,000 is punishable by up to 5 years in prison and or a $10,000 fine, or three times the amount of damage, whichever is greater.
