Pontiac Man Charged With Murder in Shooting Death of Warren Teen

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – A 19-year-old Pontiac man is facing multiple felony charges, including second-degree murder, in the fatal shooting of a Warren man earlier this month.

Kqualin Isaac Douglas

Kqualin Isaac Douglas, 19, was arraigned Monday in 50th District Court in Pontiac on charges of second-degree murder, tampering with evidence, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Magistrate Angelena Thomas-Scruggs ordered Douglas held on a $300,000 bond.

According to investigators, Douglas is accused in the Jan. 7 shooting death of 19-year-old Cornelius Traves Murphy Jr. Murphy’s body was discovered the following day near a residence in the 100 block of North Jessie Street in Pontiac.

Police say a caller reported seeing a man lying in a field who was not breathing. Paramedics responded and determined Murphy had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard praised investigators for their work on the case.

I am proud of our team that began an investigation with nothing and through their diligence and professionalism were able to not only identify a suspect, but gather enough evidence that charges could be brought.

We look forward to the justice system moving forward on this case on behalf of the victim, his family and the community.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard

Authorities confirmed Douglas turned himself in to police early Monday morning.

Murphy’s death marks the first homicide of 2026 in the city of Pontiac. The city recorded six homicides in 2025.

Douglas remains lodged in the Oakland County Jail pending further court proceedings.
