Port Huron, MI – The Port Huron Police Department has introduced the community to its newest K9 recruit — an energetic young Belgian Malinois named Widow, who is currently training to become the department’s next police dog.

According to police, Widow’s journey to the department began last fall when her previous owner contacted Sgt. Sly looking for help finding the dog a new home. After meeting her, Sgt. Sly decided to adopt Widow himself. It did not take long for officers to notice that the young dog possessed the drive, intelligence, and focus often required for police work.
In December, Sgt. Sly approached department leadership with the idea of donating Widow to the City of Port Huron so she could begin training as a future replacement for K9 Zeke, the longtime partner of Officer Teichow. City officials approved the proposal, allowing Sgt. Sly and Officer Teichow to begin early training with Widow.
Since then, the department says Widow has continued to impress trainers with her work ethic and natural ability, showing strong potential as a future police K9.
The goal is for Widow to complete the necessary training and become fully certified by the fall. Once she is ready for active duty, K9 Zeke will be able to step aside and enjoy a well-earned retirement after years of service.
Widow is currently 11 months old and is a Belgian Malinois, a breed widely used in police and military work because of its intelligence, agility, and high drive.
If training continues to go as planned, Port Huron officers say the community can expect to see Widow serving alongside officers in the near future.
