A fast, coordinated response involving multiple agencies led to the swift containment of a diesel fuel spill in Sterling Heights and prevented the hazardous material from spreading into the Clinton River watershed.
The spill occurred when approximately 50 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from snow plowing equipment operated by a contractor in the parking lot of a strip mall near 15 Mile and Schoenherr roads. Sterling Heights firefighters responded immediately, working alongside the city’s Department of Public Works to deploy multiple containment booms along the Red Run Drain.
As a precaution, Clinton Township firefighters placed an additional boom near Utica and Hayes roads in case the fuel traveled past Metro Parkway and toward the Clinton River. Macomb County Public Works officials also launched a drone to track the diesel sheen from above, confirming it did not move beyond Freedom Hill County Park.
After a neutralizing agent was applied in the parking lot, an environmental cleanup contractor began clearing the storm system and removing contaminated snow and snow melt for proper disposal. Local, state, and federal agencies were notified as part of standard hazardous materials response protocol.
Macomb County Public Works Commissioner Candice S. Miller praised the rapid response, specifically commending the Sterling Heights Fire Department for its swift action. She noted the incident, while accidental, underscored the importance of established emergency procedures and interagency coordination when environmental hazards occur.
Officials say cleanup efforts are ongoing, and no further spread of the diesel fuel has been detected.
