A routine patrol turned into a weapons recovery operation Thursday morning after MSP’s Trooper 2 air unit spotted a driver pushing more than 100 mph on the Lodge and tracked him all the way into Oakland County. According to investigators, the suspect pulled into a residential area and immediately walked over to a box near the home — behavior that drew the attention of the FLIR-equipped flight crew.
Air Unit Sees Exactly What He Tried to Hide
Using the aircraft’s thermal technology, the Trooper 2 crew watched the 19-year-old from Farmington place what appeared to be a firearm inside the box. Troopers on the ground moved in moments later, detained the suspect, and recovered multiple guns from the location.
Reckless Driving + Illegal Guns = Another Case Headed to Prosecutor Review
Investigators say this case is now pending review by the county prosecutor’s office. MSP leadership continues to highlight two ongoing issues — dangerous speeding and illegal firearms circulating in suburban communities.
Official Statement
F/Lt. Mike Shaw reiterated that the department is dealing with both problems on a regular basis. “First, driving recklessly continues to be a problem. Second, great work by the crew of Trooper 2 and the use of technology in order to get these firearms off the street.”
