Redford Township Police have officially brought back a K-9 unit, swearing in K-9 Rex during a recent Township Board meeting. The 18-month-old German Shepherd, originally from the Czech Republic, will serve alongside his handler, Officer Mike Sharp, as part of the department’s patrol and investigative operations.
K-9 Rex is fully certified through the National Association of Professional Canine Handlers in tracking, narcotics detection, handler protection, and evidence searches. That gives Redford Township a powerful new tool for locating suspects, recovering evidence, and assisting officers in high-risk situations across the community.
The return of the K-9 Unit was made possible through strong community and business support. Detroit Diesel donated $13,000 toward Rex’s purchase and initial training, while Pet Supplies Plus is continuing to support the department by providing food for the new police dog.
Redford Township Police say the addition of K-9 Rex strengthens their ability to keep residents safe and brings back a policing tool that has long been missed in the township. With Rex now officially on duty, the department’s K-9 Unit is back in action.
