ROAD RAGE SHOOTING ON I-696 NEAR WOODWARD IN ROYAL OAK SATURDAY EVENING

Michigan State Police shut down part of westbound I-696 near Woodward Avenue in Royal Oak on Saturday evening after a driver reported being shot at during a road rage incident.

Troopers say the call came in around 5:20 p.m. when a motorist told dispatchers they were targeted by the driver of a white Infiniti SUV. According to the victim, the man behind the wheel, described as a light-skinned Black male, pointed a firearm out the window and fired two shots in their direction.

The caller’s vehicle was not hit and no one was injured. A K9 unit swept the freeway, but no evidence was located. The freeway was closed for about an hour while police investigated.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is urged to call 855.MICH.TIP or 800.SPEAK.UP.

“There is never a reason to settle a dispute with a firearm, especially over something as simple as a driving error,” said F/Lt. Mike Shaw. “If you find yourself in a situation with someone who is out of control while driving, create distance and call 911.”
