Road Rage Turns Violent: Gun Pulled, Family’s SUV Rammed on I-75

GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. — A 36-year-old Clio man has been charged with six felonies, including two counts of assault with intent to murder, following a violent road rage incident that investigators say involved a handgun and a deliberate vehicle strike on a freeway.

According to the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred Dec. 13 along U.S. 23 and I-75 in southern Genesee County.

Investigators allege the suspect was driving northbound on U.S. 23 when he encountered a Livingston County family of four traveling in the right lane at a slower speed. Chris Swanson said the suspect began tailgating the family as traffic continued north onto I-75 through Mundy and Flint townships.

Multiple eyewitnesses later reported seeing the suspect point a handgun out of his driver-side window at the family while continuing to follow them, Swanson said.

As the family slowed while traveling northbound through Mt. Morris Township, the suspect allegedly struck their SUV in Vienna Township, sending it spinning into the median. Authorities say the maneuver caused significant damage, and the family’s vehicle was declared a total loss. No serious physical injuries were reported.

The suspect was arrested based on statements from several drivers who witnessed the incident and immediately contacted 911.

Prosecutors authorized the following charges:

  • Two counts of assault with intent to murder
  • Two counts of felonious assault
  • Two counts of felony firearm

The suspect was arraigned Dec. 17 in Genesee County District Court. Bond was set at $50,000, which he posted, resulting in his release from custody. A probable cause hearing originally scheduled for late December was adjourned and is now set for Jan. 8.

If convicted on the attempted murder charges, the suspect faces a potential life sentence.

Swanson said the case highlights the dangers of escalating emotions behind the wheel.

“Do not pull out a handgun to threaten people because you’re angry about how someone is driving,” he said. “Road rage is something we can all understand, but it can never be an excuse for violence.”

The sheriff encouraged drivers who feel threatened to disengage, exit the freeway when safe, and contact 911.
