According to the Romulus Police Department, the incident happened Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at approximately 9:53 a.m. Investigators say the man drove to the school and approached the front entrance, where he spoke to a school secretary through the intercom, demanding that his son be released immediately. The secretary recognized the man as someone who had previously been barred from school property and had a history of unstable behavior. While speaking with him, she realized he was armed with a handgun and immediately called 911.

The school was placed on lockdown and staff were informed that it was not a drill. Police say gunshots were then heard, prompting the secretary to drop to the floor while remaining on the phone with 911. She reported that the man was attempting to force entry by shooting at the front door locks. Officers arrived within minutes, took the suspect into custody, and recovered a revolver from the scene. Police say the cylinder contained seven spent rounds.

Authorities identified the suspect as Shawntez Marshaun Gregory, 44, of Romulus.
