Sand contamination triggers major recall for Jeep Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4xe models

Jeep is facing another major recall. More than 112,000 Wrangler and Grand Cherokee 4xe plug-in hybrids may have been built with sand contamination inside the engine block, according to Stellantis and new federal safety documents. The defect can cause catastrophic engine failure, loss of propulsion, or vehicle fires.

The issue stems from the casting process at the engine plant in Mexico. Sand used to form the engine block was not fully cleared out before assembly. That leftover debris can wear through internal parts and destroy the engine over time. Production records show contaminated engines were built from June 7, 2023, through March 4, 2025.

Models affected:

  • 2023–2025 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe
  • 2024–2025 Jeep Wrangler 4xe

Totals involved:

  • 36,840 Grand Cherokee 4xe
  • 76,019 Wrangler 4xe

Stellantis reported the following to regulators:

  • 36 engine fires
  • 50 loss-of-propulsion reports
  • 144 warranty claims
  • 36 customer support cases
  • 3 injuries

Drivers may hear a knocking sound or see a warning light before the engine fails.

A repair plan is still being developed. Owners will not receive official mailed notice until December 29. Until then, Stellantis is advising customers to park their vehicles outdoors and avoid driving them.

This recall follows two recent hybrid Jeep recalls involving fire risk and sudden power loss. Jeep 4xe drivers are now waiting for the company to finalize a long-term fix.
