Troopers responded to a report of two males physically fighting inside a hotel lobby in the Charter Township of Royal Oak at about 2:20 a.m on Monday, November 17. The Detroit Regional Communication Center had been notified of the disturbance, prompting troopers to check the location.
A review of hotel security footage showed the fight escalating until a pistol fell to the floor as the two men struggled. The sight of the firearm hitting the ground caused the fight to break off. One of the men picked up the pistol and immediately fled the hotel in a vehicle.
Troopers began searching the area and located the suspect vehicle on 8 Mile Road only minutes later. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver, a 45-year-old male from Detroit, was taken into custody without incident.
According to troopers, the man showed clear signs of impairment and was later determined to be more than three times the legal limit. He was lodged pending a full review by the prosecutor, and the case will move forward once the charging decision is complete.
